The New Ulm Area Chamber of Commerce is excited to announce the 2026 Business of the Year nominees. The following are nominated for Large Business of the Year: J&R Schugel Trucking, Nuvera, and Weelborg Chevrolet. The Small Business of the Year nominees are Guldan Family Farm, Schaefer Companies, and Ulm Sweet Ulm. Congratulations to all of the businesses for their recognition from the New Ulm business community.
Since 1974, the New Ulm Area Chamber of Commerce has recognized businesses in the New Ulm area for their Chamber involvement, community involvement and economic impact. Chamber members were asked to nominate businesses for this award. The Chamber Board of Directors reviewed all nominations and selected the top 3 nominees in each category. Now it is time for the Chamber Membership to decide who will be awarded this coveted recognition. The Large and Small Business of the Year Award recipients will be announced and recognized at the Chamber Annual Meeting, taking place on Tuesday, February 10th at Turner Hall. Tickets are on sale now online or at the Chamber Office.
Every Chamber Member Business/Organization can vote once in each category, Large and Small. We’ve compiled profiles on each of the nominees to ensure voters can make an informed decision before casting their votes. This year, there is online and in-person voting options. Online voting is open now through February 9th. In-person voting will take place at the Chamber Annual Meeting on February 10th.

Guldan Family Farm
Small Business Nominee

Guldan Family Farm is humbled and honored to be among the finalists for New Ulm’s Small Business of the Year. It’s truly been a privilege to be a part of our community – watching it grow and change while being able to provide neighbors with some of the healthiest AND tastiest food that can be grown in Minnesota. In what began as an unconventional experiment to withstand the farm crisis in the early 1980s, Denny and the late Janice Guldan merged an idea with a store front and created Rivervine – providing a variety of fresh produce and gardening/wildlife/pet supplies and gifts of the like through 2003.
At that time, Broadway was undergoing construction and a choice was made to put their collective energy into attending farmers’ markets and expanding the produce operation, moving forward as Guldan Family Farm thereafter. We began our area’s first CSA program in 2008, bringing an educational and personal connection to local agriculture. We’re proud to continue raising 25 acres of all things fresh from “A”sparagus to “Z”ucchini for New Ulm!
As a family operation, we prioritize contributing to the community we live in. “If you can, you should. If you should, you must” was a phrase often spoken as we saw a surplus of our fall crops on the horizon. This season over 6,000lbs of produce, harvested by hand, was donated to NU’s Community Friends Thanksgiving Dinner, NUMAS Haus, Southern MN Food Recovery, veterans’ programs, and others. Having a “past life” in education, we partnered with NU schools presenting in classrooms, partnering with River Bend Educational District’s WORK student program, collaborating with a student field trip involving decorated pumpkins donated to residents in assisted living facilities. We even hire about 20 youth for what is typically their first “real job” and start them with an incentive pay structure.
Since transitioning to the next generation of the farming family, we’ve focused our efforts in contributing to and being involved in the Chamber and its mission of promoting NU’s business community. We’ve had a presence in NUBRA, Network New Ulm, and the Chamber’s board of directors. When the Chamber took on the task of organizing the NU Farmers Market (where we’ve had a regular presence since its inception 29 years ago), we immediately volunteered to be on the steering committee and have been a proud sponsor since. Winter being a bit slow on the farm, we’ve volunteered with Baggin’ in the Street and sponsored the event as well.
In 2025 we were proud to have a role in our economy and collaborate with many community businesses. We make it a point to purchase as much of our farming supplies from local businesses as possible, be it seed stock, starting soils, or trees for a potential peach crop years down the road. We provided fresh ingredients to Sippet Coffee and Bagels, Lola’s, Oak Hills Living Center, and Ecumen Pathstone, while patrons of the Market could find us there nearly every Thursday and Saturday of the season. We were grateful to A to Zinnia for allowing us to have a visible presence during our early peas season before the markets began. As 2026 is still “fresh,” we look forward to new and upcoming collaborations and are excited for what the future holds in store!
Schaefer Companies
Small Business Nominee

Founded in 1922 by Art Schaefer as the original; Schaefer Well Company, this family-owned business has proudly provided New Ulm and the surrounding community for over 100 years with expert water well drilling and repairs. Schaefer Well Company has grown and evolved over the last century, and is now under the ownership of Willis Schaefer, grandson of the founder Art Schaefer.
The company has expanded to include Schaefer Crane service, starting in 1981, under the direction of Steve Schaefer. The Crane Service started with a single 12½-ton crane and the business has grown to serve New Ulm, surrounding areas & States, offering a large fleet of crane sizes for all project sizes.
Most recently, in 2021, guided by the vision of Ryan Bauer and Derek MacHolda, Schaefer Contracting LLC was formed, extending the family of companies into general contracting and millwright services for the grain, ethanol, and processing industries. This expansion carries on the values shared by Schaefer Companies and their commitment to quality, professionalism and giving back to the communities in which they serve.
Schaefer Companies’ dedication extends beyond business, with active involvement in events like Spiking in the Streets, sponsorship of the Brown County Free Fair concert, and the beloved upside-down Christmas tree display —featured nationally on news outlets. Schaefer’s thanks you for your nomination!
Ulm Sweet Ulm
Small Business Nominee

Ulm Sweet Ulm (USU) is a vibrant community hub in downtown New Ulm designed to serve as a “third place”—a place outside the home, work, and school—where people of all ages build community. Home to Lykke Books, NU Brew Cafe, Lykke Communities (nonprofit organization), and Healing Routines (yoga), USU brings together retail, food and beverage, art, education, and wellness under one roof. Their mission is to empower growth, foster community, and build lifelong connections. USU offers community spaces including an art gallery with rotating displays of local visual artists, a rentable multi-purpose room, and a bicycle workshop focused on hands-on learning.
Community Involvement
Community is the core reason Ulm Sweet Ulm was founded. Lykke Books hosts four book clubs along with many community-led groups and gatherings. The bookstore regularly brings a mix of local, regional, and nationally recognized authors—including Allen Eskens, William Kent Krueger, and Kate DiCamillo—for book signings, meet-and-greets, and community discussions.
USU collaborates with many area organizations, including Allina Health Hospice, area libraries and schools, Brown County Historical Society, The Grand Center for Art & Culture, Gutes Essen Deli & Catering, Sweet! Indeed Bakery (Madelia), and Martin Luther College. These partnerships help drive foot traffic, create shared visibility, and strengthen downtown New Ulm’s collective success.
Since opening in May 2024, the Ulm Sweet Ulm organizations have led more than 250 public events and classes, in addition to private events hosted by community organizations and individuals. Activities have ranged from yoga classes and art exhibits to school book fairs, open mic nights, bicycle repair classes, Spanish-English language exchanges, crocheting groups, book exchanges, and more. Lykke Books regularly donates books to area schools and Little Free Libraries, mentors students, and serves as a vocational assistance worksite through MNVAC.
Lykke Communities and its board of directors work across New Ulm to promote social connection. They conducted a community-wide youth survey and focus groups to identify areas of need that guide programming decisions, including offerings such as group ukulele lessons and bike maintenance classes. The board includes community leaders representing 4-H Extension; Healthy Communities, Healthy Youth; the NU Police Department; ISD 88; mental health practitioners; and the Optimist Club.
Economic Contributions
In addition to serving New Ulm residents, USU has become a regional destination. Customers routinely travel from Worthington, Fairmont, Windom, and Mankato to shop the bookstore while also visiting area restaurants and attractions. USU also offers space for pop-up shops, providing local makers opportunities to sell their goods during single- or multi-day events with minimal overhead.
Chamber Involvement
Ulm Sweet Ulm supports the New Ulm Chamber of Commerce through membership, sponsorship, in-kind donations, and volunteerism. Prior to opening, USU sponsored a booth at the Home & Health Show, using attendee feedback to inform what is now the USU community hub. USU hosted the Teacher in the Workplace program, and team members currently serve on multiple Chamber committees, including the Chamber Board, Downtown Action Team, and Weihnachts Markt. USU has also historically served on committees such as Oktoberfest and the Women’s Networking Event and includes Network New Ulm alumni.
USU participates in community pride-building efforts such as Festive Facades, the Halloween Hop, and major shopping events. They sponsor events including Oktoberfest and the Women’s Networking Event, provide in-kind donations for Chamber initiatives such as HYPE, NNU, and Willkommen, and volunteer at the Farmers Market to offer family-friendly activities.

Over the past five decades, the company has remained steadfast in its mission to provide safe, innovative, and superior transportation and logistics services, while supporting both nationwide operations and the local communities it serves. A major milestone came in 2014, when J&R Schugel became 100% employee-owned—empowering employees with a direct stake in the company’s success and fostering a strong culture of pride and accountability.

The company maintained a strong focus on southern Minnesota, picking up 5,742 outbound loads for customers in the region, with more than 57% originating in New Ulm. Local partners included Kraft (2,246 loads), 3M (110 loads), AMPI (169 loads), and American Artstone (137 loads). Additionally, 3,689 inbound loads were delivered to support businesses across southern Minnesota, further reinforcing J&R Schugel’s commitment to strengthening the local economy.

Also in 2025, J&R Schugel joined the IPS family of companies, forming an organization operating approximately 2,000 tractors and 6,000 trailers. Large Business Nominee

Weelborg Chevrolet truly appreciate the community’s trust in us as their local Chevrolet dealership. This nomination means a great deal to our entire team. Our goal is to be here for the long term, continuing to serve the community whether customers are shopping for their next vehicle, bringing in their car for maintenance, or exploring financing options. Our team is committed to delivering a positive and professional experience.
We want people to know that we are more than just a place to buy a vehicle—we are a longstanding local business deeply rooted in the community we serve.
Built on a foundation of trust, integrity, and customer care, we have spent many years helping families, farmers, and businesses find reliable transportation while building lasting relationships. Our mission goes beyond sales; it’s about supporting the people and organizations that make New Ulm a great place to live and work.

Community involvement is a core value at Weelborg Chevrolet. We believe a strong business and a strong community go hand in hand, which is why we actively support local schools, nonprofits, youth programs, and community events throughout the year. From sponsoring athletic teams and school activities to contributing to fundraisers, raffles, and local causes, our goal is to give back in meaningful and consistent ways.

Economic Contributions
As a locally operated dealership, we play an important role in NU’s economy. We provide stable employment opportunities for local residents across sales, service, parts, and administrative roles, helping families build careers close to home. We also work with local vendors and service providers whenever possible, keeping business dollars circulating within the community.
Recently, we have invested significantly in our facilities, including a showroom and service expansion designed to better serve customers and support future growth. This investment reflects our long-term commitment to New Ulm—not only as a place to do business, but as a community we are proud to be part of.
By offering a wide selection of new and pre-owned vehicles, along with certified service and parts, we help keep residents shopping locally rather than traveling outside the area.
Chamber Involvement
We have been an active member of the Chamber for many years. Through this involvement, we collaborate with fellow businesses to promote local commerce, participate in community events, and support initiatives that encourage economic development.
