New Ulm  was recently named to a national list, The 10 Most Affordable Small Towns Where You’d Actually Like to Live.  The list was compiled by Realtor.com, the official website of the National Association of REALTORS.  The data team assessed every U.S. “micropolitan area” (with a population between 10,000 and 50,000). They used U.S. Census Bureau data covering the dining, entertainment, recreations, and quality of life business establishment in the area, and calculated their rate per 100,000 residents. They used home list prices as well, but limited the list to towns with a median list price per square foot is less than 150% of the national average.

The list favored towns “most affordable small towns with big quality of life”.  New Ulm has been seeing some national and statewide attention recently by being listed in USA TODAY’s Top 6 Midwest “European” Cities to Visit and Mpls.St.Paul Magazine’s Top 12 Towns Worth the Weekend!.  New Ulm is the only MN town on this Top 10 list, stating that it is the smallest of any places on their list and one of the most distinct. Highlighting the German Heritage, the holiday season, the Glockenspiel, Flandrau State Park, and of course Oktoberfest.
