The Willkommen Committee recently welcomed the New Ulm Sleepy Eye Hockey Association (NUSE Hockey) as a new member of the New Ulm Area Chamber of Commerce! Board President, Justin Remus, has served on the board for seven years, five of which as president. He got involved after his oldest son started playing hockey. NUSE Hockey has several age divisions from 6U (6 and under) to Bantam (15 and under). NUSE is unique from other hockey programs in the state in that they offer all equipment (from skates to sticks to helmets) free of charge to kids in the program up to 8U.
The free equipment is offered for a couple of reasons: to make the sport approachable for all families so the cost is not as much of a barrier, and also to ensure the safety of all the players. By providing top-quality equipment to kids as they are starting out in the sport, they can ensure that everything is the proper size and fit for the player. NUSE also keeps their rates lower to fit the demographics of the area, whereas programs in the cities and other areas can cost thousands more. These initiatives have been working, as they have strong community support and the program continues to grow as one of the largest in the area. 95 percent of their coaches are volunteers, and parents are very involved in various volunteer opportunities.
