"Why Would Someone Want to Visit New Ulm, Minnesota?"In these days of “cookie-cutter towns” that are becoming more and more alike, New Ulm stands out as unique. From our beautiful river valley setting, to the stunning brick homes and gorgeous architecture, coming to New Ulm offers an immediate “sense of place” that tells you that you’re somewhere special. Our German ancestors left a legacy that is still honored today and is evident to even the casual observer. Whether you’re looking for a good time at a festival, a unique shopping experience, discovering history of national significance or just a respite away from the ordinary, come see why the former National Tourism Association President, Mark Hoffmann, said, “you’ve got it here - small town America at its best!” New Ulm is often called the "City of Festivals" and while there is usually something happening every month, we are most famous for four big festivals. A new festival this summer is "Bavarian Blast" with entertainment from Germany, dancing, ethnic food and drink, craft shows, children’s activities and so much more! The dates are July 21, 22 and 23. Next in importance on the New Ulm calendar is “Oktoberfest” and it happens the first two weekends in October. It is a joint-festival, held at both the Holiday Inn and the Chamber of Commerce downtown. Both venues feature music with German and local bands, plenty of good food and drink, horse-drawn trolleys and great fall weather and colorful river valley views. Winter needs a few events to warm us up and the Schell’s “Bock Beer Fest” does just that. Held on the grounds of this historic brewery, it features food, Schell’s beer, a live band and a medallion hunt. Be prepared for a “lively” crowd enjoying the outdoors! Held on the same day as the Bockfest is “Fasching”. This “German Mardi Gras” is held at historic Turner Hall and is sponsored by the famous Concord Singers. It features nonstop music with bands on 2 stages, great food by the Turner Ladies and a hilarious Parade of Costumes in the evening. Both of the above events are held the Saturday before Ash Wednesday.
