“Looking Deeper”

If you’ve got more time or are back for a second visit, consider seeing these other attractions:

Participate in one of New Ulm’s many festivals, such as Heritagefest in mid-July, Oktoberfest in early October or Fasching and Bockfest in late winter or any of  the smaller, but still interesting events throughout the year. Auto Fest, FlandrauFest, River Blast, the Parade of Lights and the Brown County Fair are but  a few of the many events throughout New Ulm’s social calender!

Explore local and national history at the Brown County Museum featuring their display on the Dakota Conflict of 1862 (the largest Indian and white battles in U.S. history!) and the artifacts in the “Ulm Room” from our Sister City, Ulm,  Germany.

Visit our historic homes at both the Wanda Gag and Governor Lind Homes. Wanda and her father, Anton, were famous artists and their home is full of “artsy” evidences such as hand stenciling and a studio. John Lind was Minnesota’s  Governor in 1899 and his grand home is also open for visits with special  “Victorian Teas” in winter.

Take in the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity and the Way of the Cross on your own. The beautiful church has remarkable architecture with an elaborate altar and large, stained glass windows. The Way of the Cross features 14, 8-foot stations of  Jesus’ last days with a grotto mid-way and an exquisite chapel at the top.

The Minnesota Music Hall of Fame is right downtown and features exhibits from all types of music in Minnesota. They have instruments, posters, clothing, exhibits and photographs from old-time music to ballroom to rock and roll.

One of New Ulm’s founding groups was the Turners and their social hall, Turner Hall, still stands awaiting your visit. Don’t miss the restored murals of scenic views from Germany in the Rathskeller and the fine woodwork in the “Dutch Room”. Enjoy a beer, a meal and friendship at this authentic German site!
